Persona 2: Innocent Sin Playtest

Being a Shin Megami Tensei enthusiast myself, when this month came in I've always looked forward to playing this game. Not only that it's directly connected to the first game but this is also it's first time to be released in English.

Yes, It's the new Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 - Innocent Sin. It's a remake of Persona 2: Innocent Sin, originally released for the PlayStation in 1999 and the first part of the sequel to Shin Megami Tensei: Persona.

The story begins with Tatsuya Suou and Lisa Silverman from the Seven Sisters High along with Eikichi Mishina from the Kasugayama High, the three of them getting involved in summoning the Joker. It is rumored that if you perform the "Joker Charm" by dialing your own cell phone number, Joker will appear and grant any wish. Lisa and three of Eikichi’s subordinates call themselves, but the Joker wasn’t as friendly as they hoped. He wipes the ideals from Eikichi’s henchmen leaving only shadows behind. The Joker also has a strange connection to Lisa, Tatsuya, and Eikichi. He happened to know and hate them. Philemon gives out the power to summon Personas to Tatsuya and Lisa (yep, the masked guy from Persona 1, remember him?). The group, then, ran off to Seven Sisters High where the school’s emblem is rumored to be cursed...

Innocent Sin received major changes, such as new character portraits and cutscenes added, an updated user interface and a new set of BGM's. The battle system is overhauled and based on the one used by the game's sequel, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. In other aspects game's original gameplay system was retained. Lastly, the Sumaru Climax Theatre quests were also added, it features sidestories written by various other authors from Atlus. The stories are quests worth hours of gameplay. Additionally, players can make their own quests.

First thing about the gameplay, it's great that they eliminated the first-person dungeon crawls, like that one in this game's predecessor. The aspect of prowling dungeons or buildings in Persona 2 is presented in a 3D map with an overhead perspective which is cool but the controls, when using the joypad, it's over-responsive! I mean, you move your joypad to the right by just a little bit and your character moves too fast you'll end up missing your destination. You can use the D-pad as an alternative but it's a bit uncomfortable.

Now moving on to the battle system, I think it's also one of this game's weak points. Once you know what spell or weapon to use, you'll keep using that when you face the same monster. This is where the "Auto-Battle" option comes in handy, it hastens up the pace but you'll be stuck seeing the same animations again and again. The battle animations and the Persona summons does get boring over time (based on experience, ugh!) To speed up further battles, the "Skip" option comes in. The skip feature replaces battle animations with flashing enemies and number of damages done.

The gameplay complaints aside, Innocent Sin still has it's strong point and that is it's story. It takes place three years where Persona 1 took off. If you have played the previous game, you will immediately see the connections unlike the latter sequels. The unique line-up of characters is just great, it makes the game a different take on 90's Japan and just like any Megami Tensei game, as you progress on the story, you could get, somewhat, pulled in the game's universe. Reaching the end of it really takes a lot of effort.

So there you have it. Innocent Sin will show you the missing link of evolution between Persona 1 and 3. It's strongest point is it's story. Most people may find it boring but it's up to you to decide if you want to check out what the "Lost Persona game" is about.

I'm still checking the game out myself, just curious on how the story goes...

Power Rangers Online, Possible US Release

According to South Korean game company, Ntreev Soft, a side scrolling MMO titled Power Rangers Online will be coming out in the latter half of 2011.

A teaser site for the game is now online. It showed an image of Mahou Sentai Magiranger which is aired in South Korea as Power Rangers Magic Force in 2006 (and adapted as Power Rangers Mystic Force in the US in the same year).

Power Rangers Online will be released in South Korea, to be published by Ntreev Soft, known for creating Pangya, and Daewon Media. It will be developed by IRONNOS, creators of Crimson Gem Saga. It will be a side-scrolling action MMO. A closed beta is said to be on its way in the near future, with a full release by the end of the year.

For now, it is still unclear what series will be the basis of the game and how far will it stray from the said source. We don’t even know if it will really be a Power Rangers game. Korea has had both the Americanized Power Rangers and the Japanese original Super Sentai broadcast there, so the game could take either series as the template for the game. While some would argue whether or not that matters, the two series are different from each other, and choosing one over the other could affect how people view the game.

Why should we care? Well first, Ntreev Soft does have a US branch. Second, the Power Rangers series still goes on today, so does the Super Sentai Series. Third, Super Sentai does have a growing fanbase outside Japan nowadays so even if the game is based on the American Power Rangers or it's original Japanese Super Sentai series, a North American localization is still possible... and hopefully, it does happen. We fans want to try the game too.

Kingdom Hearts 3D, Further Plans for The World Ends With You

It was reported earlier that Neku Sakuraba, from the Nintendo DS game The World Ends With You, will appear as a guest character in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine features an interview with Tetsuya Nomura about the upcoming Kingdom Hearts.

Famitsu asked the creator if Neku's appearance in the game as a guest character was a hint that Nomura still has plans for The World Ends With You.

Replying to the question, Nomura wouldn’t confirm a sequel outright but stated that Neku’s presence could be a hint of something coming and that Square Enix are working on something. For now, that’s as close to an official announcement as we’re going to get.

The game series is loosely based on the classical Chinese novel, Shui Hu Zhuan by Shi Naian and Luo Guanzhong. Each individual game in the series center around relative themes of politics, corruption, revolution, mystical crystals known as True Runes and the "108 Stars of Destiny" — the 108 protagonists who are loosely interpreted from the source material.

Galaxy Express 999 (1979 Movie) Review

I've checked this movie out of curiosity. I wanted to see what this popular anime title was like and how Captain Harlock was related to it...

The 1979 movie version of Galaxy Express 999 is a compression of the story of both the manga and the television series of the same title created by Leiji Matsumoto. It follows the adventure of young street kid Tetsuro Hoshino as he desires for an indestructible mechanical body to be able to live forever and to avenge his mother who was killed by Count Mecha. While the mechanical bodies are expensive on Earth, it is supposedly given away for free in the Andromeda Galaxy, the last stop for Galaxy Express 999, a space train that only comes to Earth once a year.

In the process, Tetsuro meets Maetel, a beautiful woman who resembles his mother. Maetel offers him an unlimited pass for the 999 if he will be her traveling companion which Tetsuro agrees to. Both of them boarded the 999 and went out on their journey to the Andromeda Galaxy.

    My Views:

Usually, I don't watch anime, movies or TV shows that's drama-oriented. Before watching this movie I thought that I might get bored with it, turns out I was wrong. I actually liked the movie. First is because of the adventure and the sci-fi elements that was present. Tetsuro and Maetel stopped over on various planets on their way and encountered  several characters including the cameo appearances of Captain Harlock and Emeraldas who had longer roles that I have expected. Second is the very touching storyline and some breath taking moments and third is the good voice acting and the musical score. Well, something is different in the BGM's of 1970's movies which makes it cool. Also, the band Godiego performed two songs in this movie: one is the insert song "Taking Off" and the other is the ending theme "The Galaxy Express 999", both songs are fit for the movie perfectly.

    Overall:

Galaxy Express 999 might've been at least 3 decades old but it can still do a good job of entertaining both young and older anime fans. It is a good summarization of a 113-episode series and It's a superb classic anime movie. No wonder it's still very popular and has spawned sequel movies, OVAs and video games. Another awesome work of Leiji Matsumoto.

...and now, the ending theme music please.

    "...The Galaxy Express 999
Will take you on a journey
     A never ending journey
     A journey to the stars..."
